This was my first visit to their new location. As I was beginning a 600 mile antiquing trek across Texas, Uncommon Objects was a must.
"Established in 1991 as a small antique collective, Uncommon Objects has matured over the years into the one-of-a-kind emporium of transcendent junk that you see before you. Twenty-four hardworking antique sellers have been assembled under one roof to bring you this very genuine and sometimes quirky slice of American culture and history.
Uncommon Objects has been described as "your eccentric uncle’s attic on steroids." And remember, this is no museum. This stuff is for sale. As the ultimate "green" shopping experience, there is something to satisfy your nostalgic yearnings and peak your sentimental curiosities. Please respect our relics & handle with care. Thank you and come again,
Uncommon Objects Staff"... taken from their website, and there ya go!
Why yes, that's a bobcat, or the likes, in a Daniel Boone outfit, and a dog... and a random black painted right hand in the seat. Oh, and of course, a chicken up top. And it only gets better. Pictures really can paint a thousand words, or things...
As Disney's "Little Mermaid" song runs through my head...
Aaaaand, in the midst of all the fantastical uncommon treasures are really amazing finds. It's a "spend time here, people" moment. Lots of time. There are room like sections and the building is tall and deep, filled deep with stuff, and there is stuff that is deep... (oh, do see banner to the left...) And once again, I'm in my element. This place is fun, amazing, full of surprises EVERYWHERE. And oddly, or more appropriately, uncommonly it is always this packed with rarities. As I stroll through the "sections" I catch myself snapping photos of every wall, piece and booth. Though I cannot possibly post them all, I will pack as many in as I can without stressing anyone's modem.
You will see wonderful antique and old farmhouse furniture, primitive pieces, industrial, western, mid-century modern and things that have no category. Yeah, it's awesome! Textiles from every country I can think of, fabulous old and weird taxidermy (one of their many signature items), art of all types imaginable and lighting in all forms. And tons of just neat old stuff! And some of the best jewelry cases with amazing pieces!!
Oh, with a half-cocked grin, I gaze.
And gaze. (Ooo, oh! A diorama! and bugs! and an old velvet coin purse!)
To top off the experience, the staff is super! Very welcoming, helpful, informative and kind. And they like dogs. And coffee. And bloggers with cameras.
So next time you're in Austin go see these guys, pet the pups, and buy lots. It truly will make your day! The prices reflect the finds and the goods can be rustic to absolutely topnotch!
And yes, oh yes, it gets better...
